William C. Byrd was the director of the Flint Institute of Music and conductor of the Flint Symphony Orchestra from 1966 to 1974 and and a very talented musician. This is why The William C. Byrd Young Artist Competition was created to award musical scholarships to deserving young aspiring musicians in honor of him. The St. Cecilia Society is the administrator of the music scholarships & provides funds for the total operation of the competition because of its direct affiliation with the Flint Symphony Orchestra. This music competition is designed to help launch musical careers. The music scholarship awards are from $1,000 to $6,000. First place winner will also receive a contract for the opportunity to perform in the Flint Symphony Orchestra.
